For six days in the heart of the city the <a title=\"Conde Duque\" href=\"http:\/\/www.esmadrid.com\/en\/madrid-neighbourhoods\/conde-duque\"  target=\"_blank\"><strong>Conde Duque Cultural Centre<\/strong><\/a> will become a colourful playground of cultural diversity with stalls, performances of music and dance, foreign films, children\u2019s storytelling, tasty food and all sorts of fun provided by forty-three countries. At a time when Madrid (and Europe) are more diverse than ever, what better way to celebrate what unites us and sample some of the world\u2019s cultural gifts while you\u2019re at it?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1362\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/feriacondeduque-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/feriacondeduque-6.jpg 623w, https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/feriacondeduque-6-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can consult the programme <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.esmadrid.com\/programa-navidad-madrid-2015-2016-pdf\"  target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0While the city\u2019s traditional Christmas institutions such as the Christmas parade, <strong>artisanal plaza-bound markets<\/strong> and \u201cLos Belenes\u201d or traditional nativity scenes, will still be delighting young and old audiences across the city.<\/p>\n<p>Determined to promote Madrid as a more open and <strong>welcome city<\/strong>, the Mayor inaugurated the colourful fair on Thursday and spoke affectionately of her vision for Madrid as \u201cthe city of the embrace\u201d (you can read more about that <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/2015\/09\/22\/welcome-to-the-city-of-hugs\"  target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a>\u00a0) and kindly thanked the collaboration and participation of <strong>43 countries, embassies, and cultural institutions<\/strong> that span all continents and religions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1363\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/feriacondeduque-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/feriacondeduque-1.jpg 623w, https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/feriacondeduque-1-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This year, Conde Duque is hosting its very own Christmas miracle as the world comes together in the spirit of togetherness and <strong>diversity<\/strong>. This means visitors to the fair can rejoice in the beauty of <strong>indigenous dance<\/strong> <strong>from Latin America<\/strong>, the <strong>tasty food of Asia<\/strong>, and the hypnotic <strong>melodies from the Middle East<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The fair\u2019s organiser David Berna had the daunting task of convincing the world to jump on board to what is largely a Western \u2013 and Christian \u2013 celebration, but he was buoyed by the enthusiastic responses to the proposal. \u201cThe idea was to throw the spotlight on what makes each culture special with a broad celebratory theme,\u201d the young organiser says as we tour the stalls. \u201cDuring my first meetings with some of the embassies one of the first questions was \u2018<em>But I\u2019m not Christian, so what can we do?\u2019<\/em> We reassured them by explaining that the idea was to work with the idea of Christmas as a holiday of having fun together and<strong> exploring different concepts of winter holidays and new year festivals<\/strong>. Every cultures has these so we used this universal element as the mutual meeting point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1364\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/feriacondeduque-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/feriacondeduque-3.jpg 623w, https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/feriacondeduque-3-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In this spirit, people will be treated to a plethora of <strong>cultural programming<\/strong> from the spectacle of foreign film in the cultural centre\u2019s theatre to the flair of <strong>Chinese dragon dancers parading<\/strong> around the square to a choir of multi-faith children singing about diversity up on stage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food is one of the most universal elements<\/strong> that brings people together over the holiday season and has been given a special focus in the central square of the reformed military barracks. \u201cPeople can feast on everything from Japanese food, to Latin American arepas, to sips of Chinese tea\u201d says David Berna. \u201cThere will be <strong>25 show cooking presentations<\/strong>, some of which are closer to home such as the Potaje Gitana Navide\u00f1a cooked up by Spain\u2019s gypsy cultural association.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1365\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/feriacondeduque-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/feriacondeduque-5.jpg 623w, https:\/\/blog.esmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/feriacondeduque-5-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite some premature confusion about the idea of a multicultural Christmas, a short tour around the stalls and amongst the performers paints an undeniably happy picture of the increasingly <strong>diverse Spanish capital<\/strong>.
